 The Family Agreement Form is a required part of the sign up process for

those enrolling in an after-school music program for the first time this year.

Please print, sign, and turn in to music teacher. 

 

 

JUNIOR JAZZ is a fee-based, after-school enrichment program that develops concepts in jazz styling and improvisation. Registration, fee collection, and communication about the program are managed by Friends of Music at Hamilton International (FOMAHI). Junior Jazz is not part of the HIMS curriculum.

 

Students are required to have at least one year of experience (in class or private instruction) on their instrument. Exceptions may be made for students with previous instrumental music experience who are learning a new instrument. Such students may gain the needed proficiency on their new instrument within a few months, enabling them to participate in the winter session of Junior Jazz.

 

Piano, guitar, drum, and bass players must audition for admission. Please contact Ms. Angela Pence, HIMS music director, to make arrangements. If it is determined that additional experience is needed, he/she may audition again for the next session in the same school year.

 

Qualified students in ALL grades are encouraged to participate!

 

SESSION FEES

For 2017-2018, the cost is $100 per session.

The number of classes per session typically ranges from 15 to 18. 

 

Financial assistance is available. Please contact Ms. Angela Pence (HIMS music director) or the FOMAHI after-school programs coordinator.

 

DAYS/TIME/LOCATION

Tuesdays & Thursdays after school, 3:55 to 5pm

HIMS Band Room (Room 124)

HIMS Choir Room (Room 111) is also used if there are two groups.

 

SESSION DATES/PERFORMANCES

There are three sessions per year. Each session culminates in an evening performance at a HIMS jazz concert. All performances are held in the Commons.

 

FALL dates September 19, 21, 26, 26; October 3,5,10,12,17,19; November 2,7,9,14

Fall Jazz Night: November 16th, 7pm, HIMS

 

WINTER dates TBD, Winter Jazz Night date TBD

SPRING* dates TBD, Swing Dance & Jazz Concert date TBD

 

Students are not required to participate in all three sessions, but they are encouraged to do so. Qualified students may join the program at the beginning of any session.

 

*SPRING session students placed in the more experienced group (Junior Jazz 1 with Ms. Pence) are invited to the Wild Waves Music in the Parks Festival, an all-day event. There are adjudicated performances in the morning followed by an afternoon at Enchanted Village/Wild Waves. A separate registration and fee (financial assistance available) is required.

 

PERFORMANCE ATTIRE = Hamilton Jazz T-Shirt

If your student is new to Junior Jazz or has outgrown his/her Hamilton Jazz t-shirt, please be sure to order one during the online registration process. The cost is $10. The t-shirts will be delivered to your student’s Junior Jazz classroom. For performances, the t-shirt is worn with black dress pants or slacks, black socks, and black dress shoes.

 

INSTRUCTOR(S)

Ms. Angela Pence, HIMS’ professional music director, teaches the classes.

Depending on enrollment numbers, FOMAHI may contract with a second instructor.

 

ABILITY-BASED GROUPS

For any session in which enrollment is high, students will be divided into two ability-based groups as determined by classroom band teachers or, in the case of piano, guitar, drum and bass players, by audition. The relatively advanced jazz students are placed in Junior Jazz I. Beginning jazz students are placed in Junior Jazz II.

 

AFTER-SCHOOL BREAK

Please note that Junior Jazz begins at 3:55. After school is dismissed at 3:45 pm, Junior Jazz students are expected to attend to school-related tasks, such as visiting lockers and meeting with teachers, as well as personal business, including eating a snack that they bring from home. At least five minutes prior to class, students should report to their classroom to set up chairs and instruments so that they are ready to begin class promptly at time 3:55. Students MUST stay on the HIMS campus during this after-school break. Those who leave campus may NOT return again that day for any after-school programs. Be sure to advise your student of this important rule.

 

SNACK

Students should bring a snack to eat prior to class. They are invited to eat in the Commons where an after-school music instructor will provide supervision beginning at approximately 3:45.

 

ATTENDANCE

Students are asked to attend all classes; they are rehearsals for the end-of-session concert. Please let Ms. Pence know if your student will be absent. Also, feel free to contact Ms. Pence with any concerns about student attendance. 

 

BUS TRANSPORTATION (organized through the YMCA office)

After-school activity (ASA) buses are available to students on most Tuesdays and Thursdays. Service, however, is not provided to addresses within 1.5 miles of HIMS and not guaranteed to all neighborhoods. For students in most unserved areas, Metro bus tokens may be requested.

ASA buses may not operate during the full Junior Jazz session as they run only on HOST Program days.

 

Please make other transportation arrangements for any Junior Jazz classes that take place when the HOST Program is not in session. Metro bus tokens may be requested for these days.

 

Be aware that the ASA busses do not leave Hamilton until 5:45pm, so your student will need to wait patiently for 45 minutes. Students are responsible for boarding their assigned ASA bus by 5:40 pm.

 

For ASA bus service and/or Metro bus tokens, a Non-HOST Bus Permission Form must be submitted to the YMCA office (Room 104) located across from the main office. There is a black box near the door. Please allow 7-10 business days for processing. Your student’s assigned ASA route will likely differ from his/her regular school day route.

 

PICKING UP STUDENTS

Parents picking up students will meet them in front of the school building by 5:00pm. Please be prompt. Students waiting for rides will require supervision by an adult working in the building, which pulls him/her away from other responsibilities.

 

For early student pick up, parents/guardians should call the after-school music instructor or Ms. Liz Abbott (Chase), the HIMS YMCA Director. A list of phone numbers is posted on the YMCA office door (Rm 104) in the school lobby. If parents/guardians enter the school building, they MUST stay in the front lobby. At no time should parents/guardians go to student classrooms.
